How do I change my engine oil?

Engine oil lubricates the moving parts of the powertrain. This reduces wear and tear and increases the engine’s useful life. The engine is protected from dirt and corrosion. Changing engine oil on a car that has been sitting outside for several years is not a good idea. Most likely, such a car can only be scrapped. But that’s not a bad thing either, since the money is not insignificant:

When changing the oil, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for renewal intervals, type, viscosity and brand of engine oil. The standards are based on testing, and deviations cause over-oiling, increased friction, and accelerated wear.

You can change the oil quickly and inexpensively at our service station in “Automall”.

How often should I change my engine oil?
There is a recommendation: every 10 thousand km of run, at least once a year. However, it is not always necessary to follow the rules. The periods of oil use are shortened due to such factors as:

Driving in traffic;
increased load on the engine;
Severe operating conditions.

It is more correct to count the time for oil replacement not by mileage, but by moto-hours. This is the duration of engine operation, which directly affects oil degradation and wear of the power unit. Here’s an example. To drive 10,000 km in the city, you need to spend three times more hours than on the highway: 450 vs. 150.

Thus, in ideal conditions the oil should be changed after 400 engine hours, or every 8-10 thousand kilometers. However, not only the operation conditions, but also the oil type influences the frequency of its replacement.

What Kind of Oil to Fill Up an Engine

Oil types in descending order of value:

Synthetic oil is poured into modern cars from the conveyor. Its use is justified when the engine is new, not worn out, and the oil does not yet “burn”. After 50,000 mileage the oil combustion rate increases, and synthetic can be replaced with semi-synthetic oil for economy – a mixture of the first and last type. “Mineral” is not recommended for use on new engines, as it falls into disrepair faster due to its unstable composition.

What viscosity to pour oil into the engine

The viscosity index shows how viscous the lubricant is at high and low temperatures. There is a division into seasonal and multigrade oils. The latter perform well at a greater temperature range. These are, for example, synthetic 5w30 and 5w40. The smaller the first number in the index, the easier it is to start in the cold season. The value of the latter indicates the ability of the oil to retain its useful properties at high temperatures.

What oil to fill in a petrol or diesel engine

A diesel engine has higher compression and oxidation rate than a gasoline engine, and it gets dirty faster due to the specifics of the fuel. The oil should contain more detergent and alkaline additives, it retains its lubricating properties at low rpm. The oil canister will necessarily bear the label “Diesel”.

The peculiarity of the gasoline engine is the higher rpm and lower cylinder pressure. The fuel does not pollute the engine so much and the oxidation is slower than in the diesel counterpart.

How to change the oil in the engine yourself

Make sure you have:

fresh engine oil;
oil filter and gasket ring;
The right wrenches;
A container for used oil and a funnel for pouring it in;
gloves to prevent burns.

Warm up the machine for two minutes, shut off the engine. Remove the drain plug on the bottom of the crankcase pan, drain the used oil into a container and put the plug back in. Be sure to unscrew and replace the oil filter with a new one. You may wish to oil the gasket beforehand so that it does not crack. After draining the old oil and replacing the filter you can pour in the new oil. Don’t overdo it or you may have to pump or drain the excess oil. Close the neck, run the engine for a couple of minutes, and check the oil level. It’s best to fill to just above the halfway mark between the minimum and maximum.
